Lincoln, NE -- Congressman Jeff Fortenberry today commended Governor Dave Heineman for calling on Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and President Barack Obama to deny permitting of TransCanada's proposed Keystone XL pipeline, which would run through the Nebraska Sand Hills and over the Ogallala Aquifer.

"I thank Governor Heineman for expressing his opposition to the permitting of the Keystone XL pipeline as it is proposed," Fortenberry said. "Many Nebraskans have expressed to their elected officials serious concerns about the pipeline's potential impacts on the Sand Hills and the Ogallala Aquifer. I have shared these concerns with the Secretary of State, urging a comprehensive environmental review. Our state's unique natural resources deserve the highest levels of protection. An alternative route should be considered."

Fortenberry has opposed various measures in Congress to cut short the Keystone XL pipeline's environmental review and authorize its permitting.
