Assessing Afghan Military Strategy
Yesterday afternoon I spoke before the House of Representatives about America’s involvement in Afghanistan. While our nation focuses on an important debate regarding health care, it is critical we not overlook the seriousness of the current situation in Afghanistan and the magnitude of our commitments there, including the tremendous service and sacrifice of our military personnel.
For the well-being of these men and women and the sake of global security, the White House and Congress must together strategically assess our Afghan policies. As an important step in this process, I asked the President to direct General Stanley McChrystal, current commander of Afghan operations, to testify before Congress, as General David Petraeus did upon taking command of operations in Iraq.
