1053 WOW: Fortenberry On Farm Bill Failure in the US House

The US House of Representatives failed to pass a new farm bill proposal last week.  The 213-198 vote is an embarrassing blow to House GOP leaders, who had hoped to tout its new work requirements for recipients of food stamps.

The 30-Republicans that voted with the entire Democratic caucus did so because they wanted support on immigration legislation. Nebraska Congressman Jeff Fortenberry told KLIN News “The farm bill is separate from immigration and I think it ought to remain separate from any immigration consideration.”

Fortenberry voted for the farm bill and added that this action gives the House a chance to potentially make some improvements

House Speaker Paul Ryan has scheduled a re-vote, but its unknown when that may happen. The current farm bill expires September 30th.
