Fortenberry Statement on the Iran Nuclear Deal
(Washington, D.C.) – Congressman Jeff Fortenberry (R-NE) today issued the following statement on the Iran Nuclear Deal:
“Although Iran has complied with the structural components of the nuclear deal, the behavior of the Iranian regime is destroying the political preconditions for the agreement’s viability,” said Fortenberry. “From Yemen to Lebanon, Iran’s emboldened and aggressive posture undermined the intended consequence of the deal. Since the deal came into effect, Iran has continued supporting militant groups, ramped up ballistic missile testing, and threatened the region and partners.
“Despite these hard realities, we should continue to look for alternative pathways for rapprochement. As we navigate a path forward, one area I believe is a priority is significant support and an expanded role for the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to strengthen verification.”
Fortenberry voted against the original Iran Nuclear Agreement in 2015. Fortenberry serves on the House Appropriations Committee and the Subcommittee on State and Foreign Operations.
